Cardiac autonomic neuropathy: Risk factors, diagnosis and treatment

Authors: Victoria A Serhiyenko, Alexandr A Serhiyenko.

Summary:

Examined how spontaneous hypoglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes affects cardiac rhythm by comparing arrhythmia frequency, heart rate variability, and repolarization markers during hypoglycemic, hyperglycemic, and euglycemic periods matched by time of day.

Key Findings:

  • Cardiac Autonomic Neuropathy (CAN) in diabetes is linked to 5 fold increase in cardiovascular mortality
  • CAN presents as resting sinus tachycardia, fixed heart rate, exercise intolerance, orthostatic hypotension, dizziness/syncope, impaired BP regulation and silent MI
  • Structured screening plus targeted risk reduction recommended: incorporate ECG, HRV and BP monitoring
