Ambulatory cardiac monitoring for discharged emergency department patients with possible cardiac arrhythmias
Authors: Donald Schreiber, Ayesha Sattar, Dorian Drigalla, Steven Higgins.
Summary:
Looked at ED patients with symptoms of possible arrhythmia who were discharged with a Zio patch monitor, showing that extended ambulatory monitoring improved diagnostic yield compared with standard 24–48 hour Holter monitoring.
Key Findings:
- 47.7% of patients had ≥1 significant arrhythmia.
- The median time to the first triggered arrhythmia for ventricular tachycardia and sinus pauses was 3.1 and 4.2 days, respectively, outside the window of traditional Holter monitoring
- 53.4% of patients had no arrhythmia despite symptoms, potentially avoiding further cardiac evaluation
